A new Year, new technology but same old Microsoft?

Rate this Entry
A new year and the gaming landscape looks to be changing dramatically. All of the major players are present but will their new technology deliver as it should?

Microsoft has chosen to go with Kinect. After most core gamers turned their backs on the idea it has been a huge success. With sales of over 2.5 million units worldwide it seemed that Microsoft had actually gone a long way to silencing the doubters. While the launch line up didn't really blow anyone away it was certainly a good mix that showed the capabilities of the new hardware.

I hadn't read a single bad thing about Kinect or the new Xbox S, until today. Apparently Kinect is making some 360's get the RRoD

If this is to be believed then there may be some flaws with Kinect, but will Microsoft address this problem efficiently or make as big of a mess as they did with the original RRoD?

My other worry for the 360 this year is the lack of exclusive games for the console.

Sure there are tons of great games coming out on multiple platforms but Microsoft seems content to get COD maps a month early instead of getting exclusive franchises.

360 exclusives in 2011:
Gears of War 3
XCOM
Kingdoms
A new Halo (possibly).

If you don't have Kinect then that is basically it.

So is 2011 going to be the year of Kinect? So far known Kinect games include:
Forza Motorsport 4 (works without Kinect as well)
Star Wars Kinect
Rise of Nightmares
Codename D
Project Draco
Steel Battalion

With these confirmed titles and with all of the shovel ware that will clog up the market there will be lots of Kinect games to choose from.

Some gamers may feel a bit left out in the cold once again by Microsoft's decisions but lots of new people will be able to enjoy the wonders of the 360.

So that's 360 in 2011, with Microsoft looking to take a big chunk out of Nintendo's profits, seemingly not worried that the 360 may change from being known as 'the' hardcore gaming console to the new casual experience.

Next time: PS3, Move and the 3DS

IT is fortunate that most games that I want are multiplatform and am strongly considering picking up a PS3 for Killzone 3 and Uncharted 3. PS3 will be huge this year with exclusives and with landing Mass Effect may be the console to own.

Hylander and I had discussed the potential problems with anything 1st generation from microsoft. Oh well...I'll pick it up and a few years when they get it right

Seemed like the new 360 was a good improvement from the original. Added some things and changed some things that all made sense. Throw on Kinect and it turns to shit? That sounds like Microsoft. I was close to getting that damn thing for my son. Had I done that and my box failed, I would be on a road trip to Bills house.
