I'm not talking about being a personal computer, I'm talking about being politically correct. Not saying or doing something that would offend anyone.
We are Crosseyed Gamers for goodness sakes, I'm sure some eye challenged people are offended by our very existence. 0o That hasn't stopped us.
To be politically correct today you really need a list of conversation do's and don'ts. Here at CEG we have a code of conduct and forum rules that spell out vaguely what we don't want to see on the site. No racist or sexist comments. Race and Sex have many definitions. We don't break it down for you, we hope you use your common sense to figure it out.
Does sexist comments include calling someone gay? How about if they are gay? What do they want you to call them instead? To me it's like short people wanting to be called little people, really tall people don't mind being called tall. I'm right handed and I want to be called right pawed. Is that cool with everyone? Is someone insinuating that right handed is better or that tall is better than short?
It reminds me of the story of the crickets stuck in a bait bucket. Some of the crickets could jump 3-4 inches high. Others could jump 6-8. The high jumpers were always calling the short jumpers names and taunting them for their pathetic attempts at getting out. Some of the short jumpers admired the high jumpers and wanted to be like them, others hated them for thinking they were superior. At the end of the day they were all still crickets stuck in a bucket. None were better than the others, simply fish bait.
What defines a race? Is it skin color, nationality or perhaps mental status or body size? CNN has a segment called Fit Nation. Are only physically fit people allowed in? Do you need a passport? We could actually be very WoW and say that our clan is our nation, or race. In some games you choose your nation, can you call someone in another nation a loser? If they lose in the Arena you could, unless their offended by that then you may need to be the better person and not be a bad sport.
Are blond's offended by dumb blond jokes? If they didn't get the joke probably.
Everyone here at CEG knows I don't use bad language, Hy asks me almost daily "Are you sure your not blonde?" I'm not but I just assume that means I'm not following along.
I play in games where people throw sexist comments at me nightly, call me all kinds of names and tell me to do stuff that would shock a porn star, oh sorry I meant Adult Entertainer. I don't let it get to me. Why? Because that's who they are and I can't change them. They don't want me to, they like being jerks.
Sometimes we come off as the jerk and don't mean to. The newest don't say word is...retard. That's the new R word from now on. The Black Eyed Peas had a hit with the song "Let's Get Retarded" meaning lets get crazzy and have some fun. No one thought anything about it, we grew up saying it and honestly some of us thought that if you were retarded you wouldn't get the insult and felt safe saying it, but it was an insult.
Can we get though a day without throwing insults.......I don't think so. It's to fun and easy at times to let off steam or stand up for yourself and your friends. I've had more people get in arguments over comments made to Other People. Defending your friends is a good thing, being crosseyed is even better. There is diversity in all people, learn to love the diversity.
"Be excellent to each other....and party on dudes" Thanks Bill and Ted, I live by those words.
