When the discussion of what games should be movies comes up the obvious names are mentioned: Mass Effect, Uncharted, Halo, Grand Theft Auto, Gears of War, and Call of Duty. With improved writing in game development many games should deserve a shot at being made into a movie. Here are five that are not part of the group above that I would love to see in a theater.
1. Legend of Zelda – Pick any game from the series and you will have a great movie. It would be even better if made by Pixar (Toy Story, Wall- E) or Dreamworks (Shrek, How to Train Your Dragon). I fell an animated movie would capture the environment and the whimsical nature of the story much better then live action. Add in Natalie Portman as the voice of Zelda, Christopher Lee as Gannon, and Taylor Lautner voicing Link and you could have a great family adventure.I’m sure I missed a few of your favorites…which games do you think should receive the move treatment?
2. Fallout: The Fallout universe is so vast and so compelling its amazing that movie hasn’t been made about this series. A post apocalyptic world with mutated animals and people, warring factions, and a dirty, gritty unforgiving environment and you have a the making of a great movie. Lets put Javier Bardem as the lead and add in some great character actors and it could be a blockbuster.
3. Half-Life 2– Anyone who has played the game will agree that this series is one of the best ever made. Its story is compelling, and it has some of the most develop characters in a gaming series. Playing the game feels like a movie that blend fast pace action with some great conversation pieces. I would love to see the gravity gun in full effect and if I have my way…should be wielded by a goatee sporting Brad Pitt.
4. Red Dead Redemption - Western have been making a come back in recent years and with a remake of True Grit set for a release and having great buzz there is no reason the Story of Marsden shouldn’t be on the big screen. With a slew of interesting characters, a great story and plenty of action with the right director and some good casting you could have a epic adventure. I would absolutely love to see Viggo Mortenson as Marsden.
5. Alan Wake - This one almost seems made for a movie or at least TV series (as that is the direction of the game anyways). In a very similar style as Secret Window and other Stephen King Novels the story grabs you and holds you to the end. Psychological Thrillers are always enjoyable and who doesn’t love a movie set in the Pacific Northwest?
