Default Microsoft Sees 3D "Not Taking Off"

If a hundred million people buy a 3D TV tomorrow, Boom! They'll roll with it.

3D. Do we care? Here's the issue. Most people just spent the big bucks to switch to Flat Screen High Definition TVs. Are all those people going to go out and buy the same TV all over again with 3D? Some will, the hard core Tech. Geeks are all over that.

Microsoft knows that. Albert Penello, Senior Director of Global Marketing for Xbox 360 talks about 3D.

“We’re going to wait,” Penello told Industry Gamers in an E3, 2010 interview.

“I mean the box is totally capable of doing it; we’ve got 3D games on the box now. If anybody came to us and wanted to do a 3D game, I would love to have their 3D games on our box. Part of my business model is not selling you a new television.”

What he's saying is the biggest name in 3D HDTV's is Sony, also the makers of PS3. By making the PS3 totally 3D compatible helps them sell more TVs.

He continues, " “On one hand I don’t want to… we’re not slamming it, we’re not opposed to it, we’re not actively trying to prevent anything from happening, but it doesn’t feel like it’s going to take off.

It’s very expensive, and you’ve got these glasses that are expensive, and I think there’s just a lot of consumer questions about how it’s going to work in the home, and is it going to be passive or active? I think, for us, I’d rather take our…. Everything in life is a trade-off, and we can have our developers go off and focus on making us the best 3D console, or we could have them focus on, “Hey, give me the best experience with Kinect,” and I think we’re deciding to go with 3D input, you know, with Kinect. We’ll follow on 3D.”

“I have no problem saying if tomorrow 3D TVs dominate the market and there’s an install base of hundreds of millions of 3D TVs, we’re going to turn on 3D like that (*snaps fingers*). Until then, I’m happy to follow.”

In short, if a miracle happens and by the end of the year we all end up with buckets of extra money and buy a 3DTV, our Xbox will be ready, until then prepare to see 3D games show up from time to time.
