The graphics get better, the story lines change a bit, your either fighting Aliens, soldiers from another country, a crew of mechanical monsters, or zombies, basically any dreaded evil guy.
First Person Shooters are what makes the multiplayer world go round. The consoles bread and butter. When you break it down they are all alike. Like templates and you just drop in your items. Let's pretend we are making a FPS Video Game.
It's going to be Tiger Woods and Halo combined. We're Calling it "The Battle for Sheshan" Aliens have taken over the golf course and appear to be famous golfers. You have to kill the aliens and save the real golfers. Where do we start?
Weapons: Shooters of course, assault and snipers are mandatory. Then add your power weapons. Launchers, lasers and chainsaws are a must. They all have one or two of each. Don't for grenades. C4, Flash, Plasma add all and your set.
You also need a bullet count and a second weapon indicator on the screen. We forget what we are carrying without it and if we picked up ammo along the way we need to know that too.
Really cool vehicles are also needed. In our game we need golf carts with turrets and some with rocket launchers to take out the ships coming in from the mother ship. We'll call the ships Bee's in our game.
Movement: Jumping is a must. The challenge of shooting what your aiming at while jumping to avoid incoming fire is what makes a good gamer. Without it you stay mediocre. All FPS have it and those who are good at it win.
Running or sprint. Halo didn't have it and it's slow without it. All new games have sprint in one form or another. The fact that you can't shoot and run is a must.
Targeting: Scoping and Cross-hares could almost be tattooed on the screen. Different scopes and laser pointers are on all weapons.
One of the most unrealistic aspects of a FPS is the regenerating health. Once in the dark ages of gaming or in other genres you have to find health or a medical kit. Now you sit behind the crate you were standing on while the one your shooting at does the same and you both regenerate and check your messages, stand up and start all over. They all do it.
Multiplayer: Mandatory for all FPS's. Some gamers don't even play the campaign. All the work the developers do in creating a story, getting big stars to do the voices and spending millions on graphics is wasted on 50% of gamers. They go straight to multiplayer and shoot their friends.
While you at the multiplayer prepare about 5 DLC's for the future. New maps and open new sections so people don't get bored and quit playing your multiplayer and make an extra 5 million while your at it.
No Dedicated Server: Have one person in the game host the party. Host has the best connection, has about a split second advantage and a touch more powerful shield. When you have host you know it, you don't die as often and your bullets aren't rubber. Gamers play all day for that one game. 23-4 with it, 7-14 without it. The adrenalin rush of host is what keeps gamers playing. It's a must.
Spawning: Doom created the term and now when your killed in a game you wait to respawn or come back to the game with full health and ammo. A present from the gamer Gods for dieing for the cause. Die..respawn..die...respawn. Sometimes in a game it's easier to die than to get new ammo in time. Respawn time of return is quicker than getting across the map to where your friends need help. Weapons will also respawn on the map at a preset time limit. The best gamers know the time and spawn points.
The Battle For Sheshan will be a great game, just like all the rest.
