Minecraft is a Lego set that spans heaven and hell
I have no idea what to make of Minecraft. It's a sort of world simulation, populated with resources and monsters, in which you dig tunnels and build castles to no real end, because the game isn't yet complete (i.e. a game). Think of it as Legos meets SimEarth meets Dwarf Fortress. Or just witness in the above video the heights and depths of Minecraft. It's a truly awesome descent.
The developer is a lone Swede named Markus Persson. This bit from his site is telling.
There's no design doc, but there are two lists; one for bugs, and one for features I want to add but think I might forget. I make sure to play the game a lot, and I've built my share of towers, and flooded my share of caves. If something ever doesn't feel fun, I'll remove it. I believe that I can combine enough fun, accessibility and building blocks for this game to be a huge melting pot of emergent gameplay.
Ah, "melting pot of emergent gameplay". Well, there you go.
You can try an earlier version for free, or you can pre-buy the currently in progress version for ten Euros, which gives you access to regularly updated pre-release builds. Get it here.
